Agribusiness in Sustainable Natural African Plant Products (ASNAPP) is a value chain development organization established to enhance growth in the African Indigenous Plant Products and horticultural Industries by intervening and building capacity along the supply chain to boost productivity, competitiveness and increase private/public investments to reduce poverty and hunger.
ASNAPP's mandates includes networking institutional capacities; linking African indigenous plant knowledge to scientific research and technology transfer, quality control and quality assurance, product development, enterprise development and markets along the supply chain.
Model/Approach:
ASNAPP adopts a market-driven, science-based commercialization approach that translates market requirements, through r ...esearch and quality assurance into products and secured orders. ASNAPP provides services and interventions to the industry along the supply chain from production to market. It collaborates with in-country NGOs, research and academic institutions, private and public sector organizations and farmer-groups in rural communities, adopting a participatory and multi-sectorial approach to natural products development, towards economic upliftment of the rural farmer.
OUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE
- Market Intelligence and Development
Through its networks, international presence, website and other trade promoting activities, ASNAPP actively gathers market intelligence by continuously assessing, tracking and communicating market needs and forces prevalent in the international marketplace. It solicits and receives market enquiries; secure orders and works with a network of rural suppliers, agents, brokers and the private sector companies to fulfill these orders. As part of market development effort, ASNAPP performs quality checks, builds the capacity of suppliers to meet buyer's specifications and ensure buyers' pay for goods supplied. Where necessary, ASNAPP actively engages in the export of certain commodities.
- Quality Control and Quality Assurance
With assistance from its network, KNUST and Rutgers University, ASNAPP undertakes sampling and chemical profiling of key commercial crops; develops quality control protocols; and work with communities and businesses to establish quality assurance systems.
Quality specification sheets are developed and provided to industry, particularly exporters to support various market development *PP also provides expertise and scientific analysis support and works with relevant state institutions and key industry players to develop international trade standards. It provides training at the national level to industry practitioners on topical quality requirements in the marketplace.
- Enterprise Development
ASNAPP undertakes commodity supply chain analyses to identify gaps and potential crop clusters for intervention and work with farmer groups/organization and the private sector to establish viable natural products enterprises. Analyses include, among others, economic evaluation of production and marketing of identified plant products, review of supply chain linkages and challenges and opportunities for intervention. Participatory decision making is employed to ensure buy-in and ownership. ASNAPP works with communities to develop viable enterprises by providing technical support and hands-on guidance as well as the promotion of working relationships with private sector partners to ensure sustained market access. A key objective is the sustainable commercialization of natural products whilst assuring food security. Using intercropping models and cropping cycles, communities are supported to incorporate natural products into their existing production and income generating activities to ensure year round income * also helps beneficiaries diversify away from risk and overreliance on traditional sources of income especially as natural products tend to be higher value and more rewarding.
- Capacity Building
Trainings are designed and executed based on the needs of the intended beneficiaries. ASNAPP works extensively at the national, individual company and community/group levels to expand the knowledge base, technical expertise and capacities of partners and beneficiaries alike in production, appropriate technologies, quality assurance, governance and business management skills. A combination of formal, conferences, workshops, seminars, and informal on-site practical training sessions is employed to disseminate information, technologies and build capacity across the industry. Materials used for the training are simplified versions (training brochures) of research work done with our partner institutions. These trainings are given to industry actors along the supply chain to help them streamline their operations, including building their capacity to improve product quality, mobilization and marketing.
Research and Development
ASNAPP draws on the expertise of and utilizes its networks of African Universities (Stellenbosch University, University of Zambia, KNUST, University of Ghana and University of Dakar), U.S. University (Rutgers University) and other research institutions like the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine (CSRPM) to provide assistance in plant breeding, sustainable production and harvesting, post harvest handling and chemical profiling of targeted indigenous plants. Research activities span ethno-botanical surveys, germplasm collection . and improvements, gene bank establishment, agronomic trials, appropriate harvesting and product handling systems, processing and value addition. Findings and technologies are disseminated through on-site technology transfers and hands-on training sessions. Taught courses have also been developed and are being offered in leading partner universities and students put on research work to expand the knowledge base on natural plant products

ASNAPP has at its disposal a pool of knowledge experts and expertise which it deploys to conduct Market/Value Chain analyses and natural products assessments at the country and regional levels. It also provides project design and implementation support to other development organizations and community based groups.

ASNAPP is registered as an NGO and not-for-profit organization in Ghana, South Africa and Zambia. It has operations in Senegal, Rwanda and the U.S.A with satellite projects in Malawi, Mozambique, Angola and Liberia.
